Every learner can thrive, given the right tools. At The Learning Gardens, cognitive therapy is how we build those tools — not by teaching workarounds or quick coping tricks, but by strengthening the underlying thinking skills that make learning, connection, and daily life possible.
Whether stress is getting in the way, focus feels out of reach, transitions are hard to navigate, or a client is simply looking to think more clearly, our cognitive therapy sessions are personalized to meet them exactly where they are.
Cognitive therapy focuses on the mental tools we all rely on to take in information, make sense of it, and respond — skills like attention, working memory, planning, processing speed, and self-regulation. When one or more of these functions is underdeveloped, still forming, or has been disrupted, it can show up as anxiety, disorganization, impulsivity, social overwhelm, or that foggy, "not quite myself" feeling.
Our approach is rooted in Reuven Feuerstein's framework of cognitive functions, which groups thinking into three phases:
Input — how we gather and take in information (focus, systematic search, attention to detail)
Elaboration — how we process and make sense of what we've taken in (logical thinking, comparison, planning)
Output — how we express and apply what we've learned (communication, precision, self-control)
Rather than offering a diagnosis-driven checklist, we identify exactly where a learner's thinking is getting stuck and build targeted, one-on-one sessions to strengthen that specific skill — so progress carries over into real life, not just into the therapy room.
Anxiety & Stress. We help learners of all ages who feel overwhelmed by complex projects, struggle with organization or forgetfulness, or carry anxiety about school, work, or social situations. By building planning, prioritization, and organized thinking skills, we address the root causes of stress rather than just managing its symptoms.
ADHD & Executive Function. ADHD affects self-regulation and executive function, not effort or character. We help clients move from impulsive and scattered to planful and organized by building awareness of impulsive tendencies, strengthening sustained attention, and breaking big projects into manageable steps.
Autism. We offer individualized support for autistic children, teens, and adults navigating everything from changes in routine to major life transitions — starting college, becoming a parent, managing relationships, or living independently. Sessions build flexibility, emotional awareness, confidence in communication, and social understanding.
Cognitive Recovery. For clients experiencing brain fog after a concussion, stroke, illness, long COVID, or during postpartum recovery, we work to rebuild — not just work around — attention, working memory, and processing speed, helping people regain clarity and feel like themselves again.
Everyone Else. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit. Many of the learners we work with simply want to think more clearly, stay organized, and approach challenges with more confidence.
Every client starts with a consultation and, where helpful, a cognitive or learning assessment to uncover specific strengths and challenges. From there, we build a personalized plan and meet one-on-one.
We offer in person sessions in:
